Trichology

Trichology is a highly specialised science concerned with the structure, function and diseases of the human hair and scalp. Clinical trichology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the hair and scalp. Trichologists are trained to advise on hair and scalp conditions but may not be a qualified doctors, and since hair problems can relate to other health matters they may refer patients to a GP or dermatologist if appropriate

A Clinical trichologist is a hair and scalp consultant who will be able to offer advice and treatment for hair and scalp problems. All registered members of the Institute of Trichologists are bound by a code of ethics which is strictly enforced. Members can be identified by checking that they have either AIT, MIT or FIT after their name.

Most problems seen by a trichologist involve either:
  • Loss of hair, thinning hair, patches of baldness or hair breakage
  • Scaling problems, either in patches or over the entire scalp
  • Excessive oiliness and/ or itching of the scalp.
